grading
There are 3 types of graded assignments in the high school platform – computer scored (CS), discussion threads, and teacher graded assignments (TGA).
Teacher Graded Assignments
Keys are provided for these in either the Unit Resources or from the online lesson page containing the assignment link. Feedback is crucial on these for students to learn from their errors prior to the next exam or assignment related to that material. Feedback can either be provided in text, in the comment box, or in a recorded explanation depending on what works best for your discipline. You will need to let students know in advance how to expect to receive their feedback. Grading is expected to be completed within 1-3 school days of receipt.
Late Policy
—Classes have mid-week due dates, but students are automatically granted an extension for full credit through Sunday at midnight. For example, an assignment due on Tuesday can still earn full credit as long as it’s submitted by the following Sunday at midnight. The last day to turn work in at the end of a semester is the Friday before finals week.
—
Every effort should be made for students to meet the deadlines outlined by their teachers. However, we understand that occasionally there is a need for some flexibility. Students must contact their teacher(s) either by phone or through kmail on a school day before the due date to request an extension. Please be aware that requests are not automatically granted. Extensions must be approved by the teacher. Requests for extensions received on or after the due date will not be granted except in case of emergency. Unless an extension has been arranged, the late policy is as follows, based on the Sunday at midnight deadline:
—
Each Monday, zeros will be entered into the gradebook for missing work.
Work submitted up to one week after the due date will be subject to a 10% late penalty and a 20% deduction thereafter.
Grading Tips and Tricks
How to Grade
This section will walk you through grading a typical teacher-scored assignment using the k12 LMS Dropbox tool. See the Help section in the LMS for more specific details on all of the buttons and fields in the Dropbox tool.
Click the Dropbox tab at the top of any screen in the course. Make sure Dropbox is selected. You have the choice to see the assignments according to the Baskets, the Students or the Entire Dropbox. To see everything in the Dropbox click Entire Inbox. Then click the name of the student whose assignment you want to access. The Inbox for this student’s assignment will open as a separate window.
Then click on the attachment icons that appear to save the files to your computer into the appropriate file. If there is more than one attachment, there will be one icon for each attachment.
When saving the file, be sure the file name includes some indicator of which assignment it is and the student’s name. Save it in a folder that corresponds to the related course, section and assignment. Then open the student’s file from your folder.
Open the Answer Key on the assignment’s lesson screen or retrieve it from the Unit Resources area for the respective unit. Keep the key open to use while you grade.
Open the answer key so it covers about half of your computer screen. Open the assignments to cover the other half of the screen. If both the answer key and student document are in Word click View - Side by Side to display the documents tiled vertically. Use the control key and scroll to change the size of the documents so you can see both of them in your window.
Copy and paste the feedback from the key to the student document for each question or task.
For scanned .tif files: Open the file in Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Use the Answer Key to add feedback for each question. Save the file with the annotations made permanent.
If the document is .tif, open it in Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Start - All Programs - Microsoft Office - Microsoft Office Tools - Microsoft Office Document Imaging
Use Insert New Text Box tool to create spaces in which to provide feedback on assignments or just copy and paste feedback using Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste.
When you have added feedback for all questions and have added the score using a new text box, save the file. File - Save As. Choose
“Options…”, and on the Annotations tab, be sure that the “Make annotations permanent when document is saved” box is checked.
(Note: You should only have to do this the first time you grade an assignment.)
Back on the Inbox of the student whose assignment you have graded click the “Add/Remove” button to open the Attachments window.
Click the “Browse” button to find the file you wish to attach and click the “Open.” Next click the “Attach File” or “Save & Attach Another File” button.
Enter the numeric grade into the Numeric Grade text box. Add the appropriate code into the Letter Grade box (g = graded and on time, l = late, Tii = submit through Turn it in, m = missing, redo = resubmit, ex = excused). Add any comments you wish in the comment box. Click one of the Save buttons to return the assignment to the student. If there are a number of assignments, “Save & Next” will take you to the next assignment to be graded.

Grading Tips and Tricks
- Stay organized by creating a folder for each assignment on your computer before you download the first student submission.
- Look through an assignment's Answer Key before you open the first student submission. This will allow you to review the assignment questions, see model student answers, and become familiar with the feedback starters for the key points in a student answer.
- Grade groups of submissions of assignments at once, rather that jumping from assignment to assignment or doing them as they are individually submitted.
- Keep the assignment Answer Key open on one side of your screen, and have the student paper you are working on open on the other side (use the View --> Side by Side feature). This will let you jump back and forth between the two quickly and make it easier to copy feedback starters from the Answer Key into the student paper.
- Save files you have graded with "_gr[student's grade]" at the end of the file name. For example, if Doug earned a 29 of 35 on his Geometry assignment, save his graded, commented assignment as "GEO 5.7 Practice Problems_Doug Smith_gr29.doc" This file naming convention will help you remember the grades to enter when you upload the assinment to send back to the student.
